In fact, when visuals lead without a unifying theme or narrative, the result is often the opposite of clarity. Slides compete for attention. Messages fragment. The audience works harder to connect the dots, and eventually stops trying. It provides structure, logic, and direction. It defines the arc of the presentation and the sequence of ideas. Story is what connects one slide to the next, and one thought to another.
